Harvey was a veteran of the Civil War having enlisted in the Union Army on Sept. 17th, 1864. He served in Cpt. Kirkham's Co. 'G', 43rd Reg. Missouri Volunteer Infantry. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of Glasgow by Price's Division of the Confederate Army. He contracted measles while a prisoner in Boonville, Mo. That event left him partially blind for the rest of his life.
Harvey married Martha Ward in 1866 and together had eleven children : John, Sarah, William, Rosa, Georgia, Lavina, Samatha, a stillborn son, Harvey O. & Kathryn. He married a second time to a widow, Rena Layson Price in 1908 when he was 62 years old. Together they had two children "Jack" & Doris. Harvey's oldest to youngest children were separated by 43 years.
