She was born Sept. 1, 1912, a daughter of the late Thomas Avery and Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Aderholt Ballard.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where she was the nursery pianist for 32 years and a member of the Women of the Church Circle 3. Mrs. Houser was a 1933 graduate of Winthrop University, Rock Hill, S.C., and a retired leader and teacher of young minds for 32 years in Gaston and Lincoln counties (Lowder School, Lincolnton).
She was a proud and loyal member of the Tryon Resolves D.A.R. in Cherryville and appointed to the State Regent's Project Committee, member of the Blue Stocking Book Club, North Carolina Education Association and member of Delta Kappa Gamma International Teachers Society.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Howard K. Houser on March 20, 1984; and three brothers Jimmy, J.C. and Hal Ballard.
Survivors include her daughter; Sara Houser Scott and husband George M. Scott, Jr. of Charlotte; three grandchildren, Kelly Scott Brown and husband Jason, George M. Scott III and wife Betsy, and Thomas Scott all of Charlotte; four great-grandchildren Sadie Scott, Holland Brown, Cade Brown and Sallie Scott; and her caregiver, Judy Bertaux.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lester Roof officiating with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
