Gussie was the daughter of Hardy Franklin McDaniel (Mt. Carmel)and Lavinia McCracken (Buckhorn), both of Laurens Co., GA.

On Aug 15, 1894, she married Andrew Jackson Bass (1872-1929 Mt. Zion), son of James Madison Bass and Harriet Scott (previously Mrs. David Andrew Hudson), both of which are also buried in Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.

Gussie had seven children, most of which lived to adulthood: Bertha Ophelia Bass LeMoine, William Byne Bass, Edward Burch Bass, Thelma Hattie Lou Bass, Clifford Clarence Bass, James Thomas Bass . Note: William Bass and Madge Bass died in childhood.

On early census records, Gussie was also known as Sarah A. E. McDaniel. Most of her siblings had 3 names as did her mother, Viney, who was also known as Rachel E. Luvina McCracken. Gussie is listed as a widow in the 1930 census for Laurens County.
