William W. Backus Sr., 82, a resident of 289 Maple St. in Oswego, passed away Thursday, January 22, 2009, at Oswego Hospital following a short illness. Mr. Backus was born in Erie, PA, the son of the late William and Edna (Lowrey) Backus. He had lived in Oswego for most of his life. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during WWII. Prior to his retirement, he was employed for many years as an inspector with Oswego Castings Co. Mr. Backus was a member of the American Legion Post #268 in Oswego. He was an enthusiastic race fan, and enjoyed golfing with his friends. He was a talented carpenter and builder and enjoyed working on many projects for family and friends, over the years. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren. Mr. Backus was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty J. (Zischke) Backus of Oswego; a son, William (Cheryl) Backus of Clay; a brother, James Backus; and three grandchildren, Kristin Backus, Nichole Backus and Jeremy Hantke. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday at Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home. Spring burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Calling hours will be held 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, 112 East Second Street in Oswego. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 201 East Sixth Street, Oswego, NY 13126.
