Julius Alvin Hood, husband of Nettie Blakely, daughter of Birmingham Pioneer Settler, William M. Blakely, was the founder and owner of Hood Machine Shop on 1st Avenue North which was the facility in which the Vulcan was cast.

"J. A. HOOD DIES

BODY OF FORMER BIRMINGHAM MAN WILL BE BURIED HERE

Relatives in Birmingham Thursday were informed of the death Wednesday in St. Augustine, Fla., of Julius Alvin Hood, 78, former pioneer Birmingham resident and railroad executive.
Mr. Hood came to Birmingham at the age of 15 and organized the Hood Machine Company, which cast Vulcan, the iron statute, soon to be placed on the crest of Red Mountain.
Mr. Hood was one of the founders of the Birmingham Athletic Club, was active in organization of St. Vincent's Hospital and also one of the first members of the First Methodist Church here. For a time he served as clerk of the Old Relay House, the first hotel in Birmingham.
Mr. Hood is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Myrtle Leonard, of Talladega, and three sons, Eugene, of St. Augustine, Fla., and Alvin and Fred hood of Birmingham.
The body will be brought to Birmingham for funeral services and burial."

Funeral services 3 pm Friday from Dillon's Southside Funeral Home. Interment Oak Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers, Bob Whitehouse, Sid Warren, Lewis Jenkins, F. B. Clements, Wallace Ward, Sinclair Bennie, Arthur Greenwood, W. F. Downing."
