Inverness Youth Buried, Mystery Surrounds Death
The burial of Nick Barbie of Inverness in the Bethel cemetery eight miles north of that town, was a final chapter in an unsolved mystery which shrouds the death of the young man whose body was found near Tacoma Feb. 21 after a three month's search.
Nick Barbie, son of Peter Barbie, went to Tacoma sometime the latter part of October 1929. An uncle, Nick Hoenig, lived in that city, young Barbie visiting the family but not living with them. Letters arrived every week from the boy until Thanksgiving when word was received from the uncle that Nick was missing. The parents felt that something was wrong for he had been prompt to write.
Time went on, Peter Barbie going to Tacoma after Christmas to join in the search which was being made by the police and detectives, but failure still resulted and Mr. Barbie returned home, though Tacoma officials continued the hunt.
On Friday, Feb. 21, Nick Hoenig read of the finding of a body, which he identified that evening as that of his nephew, the grey suit the boy wore being one of the principal means of identification, a name label bearing the name "Nick Barbie, Illinois, 1929," being in the pocket.
The body had been discovered that day covered with moss and brush on the military reservation near Spanaway, WA, by a young boy looking for cows. The body was in a state of decomposition so the authorities have not been able to determine if he was shot or poisoned.
The motive for murder is presumed to be theft as no money was found on the body and a $50 watch was missing.
The father of the young man was notified, he going to Tacoma to reclaim the remains which were brought to Inverness. Services were held in Tacoma previous to the trip home, the final interment occurring last Thursday near the home of the boy's parents.
