Malinda is one of nine children born to David Franklin (1825-1898) and Malinda Meeks (1827-1865). David and his wife Malinda came to Indiana in 1853 with five of his brothers, and settled in Madison and Hendricks Counties.

Malinda met John Smith Redd in Indiana and they married on 10 Jan 1878 in Union County. They made their home in Brownsville and had nine children: Charles, b1878; Joseph, b1881; Ann, b1882; Rachel, b1885; Jesse, b1888; John, b1889; William, b1898; Emma, b1900; and Robert, b1904.

Malinda's father David left Indiana shortly after 1880, with four of her brothers - Samuel (1854-1909), James, John (1858-1940) and David Wesley (1860-1945). They went to Kansas, and then to Fort Morgan, Colorado. Samuel remained in Colorado and then went to Washington, but James, John, David Wesley, and father David went back to Kansas and settled in the Parsons, Galesburg, and Thayer areas. Malinda and John Redd remained in Union County, Indiana.
