George served as a Second Lieutenant & Bombardier on B-24D "Yankee Doodle Dandy" #42-40077, 319th Bomber Squadron, 90th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He is believed to have resided in Santa Clara County, California prior to the war.

B-24D #42-40077 took off, with a crew of 13, from Nadzab, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea on a bombing mission over Hollandia, Jayapura Regency, Papua Province, Indonesia.

They were hit by ground anti-aircraft fire and also attacked by Japanese fighter aircraft. Several of their engines were knocked out and the B-24 ended up crashing south-east of Hollandia on April 12, 1944. Two parachutes were seen leaving the B-24.

George was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

He was originally interred in Manila and was later repatriated here on February 20, 1950.

Service # O1550269

The reason he is named on a group headstone is because when soldiers & sailors were killed in close proximity to each other they were unable, at that time, to identify them separately and interred their remains together in one grave.
