They were hit by ground anti-aircraft fire and also attacked by Japanese fighter aircraft. Several of their engines were knocked out and the B-24 ended up crashing south-east of Hollandia on April 12, 1944. Two parachutes were seen leaving the B-24.
Bernard was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war.
Bernard was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
