Mattie was in California by the early 1880's having married a ranch manager by the name of James Crawford. She had a son, Harry, by him who died in 1890. James and Mattie were divorced 1888 or earlier. For the rest of her life she went by Crawford, even extending the Crawford name to her daughter Anna.
When Anna married Thomas Piper in 1892 in Visalia, California, Mattie was to live with them for the duration of their marriage.
In 1930 Anna died and 6 days after she was buried, Mattie was committed to Fairmont Hospital in San Leandro for senility.
Records show she was cremated at California Crematory. Records at the Chapel of the Chimes show this, but the location of her ashes are missing. It appears from the facility records that her ashes were stored there in 1936. But there is a hand written note that says: "Del to County 5/26/38".
This needs more investigation as if interpreted correctly her ashes were never claimed and may eventually have ended up in the County Cemetery - Potter's Field.
I am leaving the memorial in this location for now as this is the last known location of her ashes as verified by California Crematory records.
