Pope Pius XII appointed him Apostolic Vicar of Khartoum, Sudan, receiving his episcopal consecration with the Titular See of Balecium from Cardinal Giacomo Lercaro assisted by Bishop Danio Bolognini and Archbishop Raffaele Baratta on September 21, 1953.
Following the demise of Msgr. Francesco Saverio Bini MCCI., Baroni was named as the First Archbishop of the Metropolitan See of Khartoum on December 12, 1974 by Pope Paul VI.
Retiring from the pastoral government of his see at the canonical age of 75, on October 10, 1981, the Archbishop died twenty years later, at the venerable age of 95, on November 10, 2001 in Bologna, Italy.
