Funeral of Dr. W. J. McGill Next Monday

Will Be Held From the First Methodist in St. Joseph at Two O'clock in the Afternoon

Funeral services for Dr. William J. McGill, whose death occurred at St. Joseph Friday, will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the First Methodist church at St. Joseph and Dr. Henry R. Mills will officiate. The St Joseph News-Press of Friday afternoon says of the death of Dr. McGill, who was a former resident of Chillicothe: Dr. William John McGill, prominent St. Joseph physician and surgeon, died at 10:30 o'clock Friday afternoon at Missouri Methodist Hospital. Death followed complications from an operation. Doctor McGill became suddenly ill last Saturday, but his condition was not considered dangerous, and he continued his professional duties. Tuesday morning he submitted to an examination and consultation with Drs. Caryl Potter, M.S. Gray and Jacob Geiger, and it was decided that an immediate operation was necessary. The operation was performed Tuesday afternoon and the patient rallied satisfactory, but his condition became worse Thursday, and that night hope for his recovery was almost abandoned. Dr. W. J. McGill was born November 6, 1871, in Shelby county, Mo. He was a son of the late Mr. & Mrs. David O. McGill, farmers. He was educated in the rural schools and in 1899 he entered Marion Sims Beaumont Medical School in St. Louis from which he graduated in 1902. In 1903 he passed the examinations of the state medical boards of Missouri and Nebraska, and then took a post-graduate course in New York. He located in St. Joseph in 1904 for the practice of his profession. In 1917, shortly after the entry of the United States in the World War, Doctor McGill was commissioned a lieutenant colonel in the navy, which commission he held at the time of his death. Soon after locating in St. Joseph he began to specialize in surgery, and in late years he devoted much of his time in research. Doctor McGill attended clinics in Europe in 1926. Last year he toured South America, accompanied by Mrs. McGill and he had arranged to go on a voyage to Iceland, Norway and Sweden this summer, sailing from Quebec June 21. He served for many years as a member of the staff of the old Ensworth Hospital and the Missouri Methodist Hospital, and was an active worker during the building campaign of the new hospital. He was a member of the First Methodist Church, the St. Joseph Country Club, Elks' Club, Buchanan County Medical Society, American Medical Association, and the Society of Military Surgeons of America. Doctor McGill was married to Miss Lucile Rockhold Dec. 16, 1895. at Chillicothe, Mo., and she survives him. He also is survived by a son, Dr. Paul R. McGill, St. Joseph; three brothers, John, Guy and Thomas McGill, Mcintosh, S.D., and three sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Sweeney, Marshall, Mo.; Mrs. Elizabeth Eastman, Hutchison, Kan., and Mrs. Hattie Mead, Blue Mound, Mo. Drs. J. M. Allaman and Victor Mead and N.N. Mead of St. Joseph, Mo. are his nephews.
