Poet. He is most noted for his work "Heart's Needle" (1959), for which he won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1960. He was born William DeWitt in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania and was educated at Geneva College in Beaver Falls. His studies were interrupted while he served in the United States Navy during World War II. After the war, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Iowa. Snodgrass taught at several institutions, among them Cornell University, The University of Rochester, Wayne State University, Old Dominion University and the University of Delaware. In addition to the Pulitzer Prize for "Heart's Needle", he was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship in 1960. His other notable works include "In Radical Pursuit" (1975), "The Fuhrer Bunker" (1977) and "If Birds Build with Your Hair" (1979).
