Festus A Pierce Rites Thursday
Funeral services for Festus Augustus Pierce, 64, druggist, civic and church leader, were held Thursday at 3 p. m. from the First Methodist church. Burial was in Oakwood cemetery. The rites were conducted by Rev. John Wesley Ford, pastor.
Pierce, owner of the P. & S. Pharmacy, died at his store Wednesday morning of a heart attack.
A native of Louisiana, Pierce was reared in Mt. Calm and Hubbard, and had been in Corsicana since 1919. He established the P. and S. Pharmacy in 1925 and owned the McPherson Drug Store here for a number of years before recently closing this unit.
Pierce had been a licensed druggist since 1916. He served in the State Militia, Texas National Guard, U.S. Army and State guard, retiring as a major after commanding; the 132nd Field Artillery and later the Texas State Guard after the National Guard units were federalized shortly before the outbreak of World War II.
He was a past president of the Texas Pharmaceutical Association, and serviced as a director of the Corsicana Housing Authority since its establishment. He was active in the Chamber of Commerce, YMCA, Community Chest, Retail Merchants Association and was a charter member and past president of the Civitan club. An active Methodist, Pierce was the Brotherhood class teacher at the time of his death and formerly was chairman of the board of stewards and was the district lay leader for years. He was an active Mason and Shriner.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Alnela Stone Pierce, Corsicana; three daughters, Mrs. Fielding Atchley, Chattanooga, Tenn.; Mrs. Jack Stroube, Abilene and Mrs. James Wells, Dallas; six grandchildren; father, C. H. Pierce, Fort Worth; three brothers, William A. Pierce, Houston; Richard P. Pierce, Fort Worth; three sisters, Mrs. W. A. Simpson and Mrs. H. B. Freeman, both of Fort Worth, and Mrs. Lester Powers, Dallas, and other relatives.
Pallbearers were Dr. E. H. Newton, Dr. J. Wilson David, L. I. Griffin, Durwood Robinson, Everett Wossum, John Garner, W. P. Brown, H. R. Stroube. Honorary pallbearers were the Official Board and Brotherhood Sunday School Class of the First Methodist church, druggists, physicians and friends of the family.
