1737 – 1793∼Unraveling the Moon families is a tedious job, and if family trees are consulted, there are many guesses there – some right and some wrong. The names of John, George, James, Joseph, Nathaniel, Samuel, Thomas, and William were used in many generations by many different Moon families. Listed on the 1815 and 1816 Alabama tax lists were David Moon, Jasper Moon, and John Moon. Were these Moon men related? There were two Joshua Moons in Madison County. One was born about 1780 and he married Sarah Perkins. Their daughter, also named Sarah, married Jackson Moon, son of John Moon (abt 1789-1844) and Mary "Polly" Lewis. The other was born in 1813 in Tennessee and married Sarah Moss in 1833. There was also Joseph Moon, b. abt 1776 in Pennsylvania d. 1867 in Madison County, AL who has not been fully identified. Some trees list a Joseph Moon (1778 – 1867) as Hester Moon's father. Hester Moon was the second wife of John Moon (b. 1789 d. 1844) after the death of his first wife, Mary "Polly" Lewis in 1820. Joseph Moon, age 84, was living with Hester and her sons on the 1860 census in Madison County, Alabama. The fact that he is in the home with Hester is an indication that he was her father. Joseph Moon b. abt 1778 is shown on some family trees as the son of Jasper Moon; however, this Joseph Moon is sometimes confused with Joseph L. Moon, who died in 1814 at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. Joseph L. Moon was one of the sons of the older John Moon d. 1818 in Madison County, Alabama. When looking at censuses, there are Moons who must be related but there are no records to connect them to the correct parents. Many of the trees posted online have mistakes and should only be used as guides – not as truth unless definite sources are shown. William Washington Moon, the son of Joseph L. Moon, was included in the biographies of the Texas State Historical Society. It was reported that his mother, Martha Moore Moon, died in 1814 at his birth, and two days later, his father, Joseph L. Moon, died at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. William Washington Moon was raised by an uncle in Jackson County, Alabama and moved to Texas in 1838 where he was a soldier, Texas Ranger, and sheriff and died in Texas in 1897.

Many researchers claim that John S. Moon was the son of William Mitchell Moon family. That is not correct. A researcher & Moon family member says:

William Moon (1744-1822) who married Sophie/Sophia had a son named John b. 1774. However John's wife's name was Susanna and they remained in TN. John who went to Alabama was not the son of William and Sophie. The Moons in TN and AL are related and I believe we will connect them eventually with careful research and the use of DNA.

CORRECTION:

I saw on the forum that you posted that Jonathan didn't have a wife on the 1830 census.
Jonathan Calvert is on the 1830 Madison Co. AL census 30/40 with three sons, a wife whose age Is the same I believe with three daughters. The Jonathan Calvert in Walker county is not this Jonathan Calvert. He is then in Henry Indiana for 1840, He is then in Greene MO for 1850 and Hill County Texas for 1860 and back in MO for 1870 where he is buried. His earliest land was with William in 1815. The 1830 census is helpful because he was living next door to Nathaniel Moon his supposed brother-in-law, Richard nearby with he and Nathaniel the same age group and Thomas in the 20/30 age group. Also Robert Wright who married one of the Calvert women.
