Roman Catholic Cardinal. Roman born Domenico Maria Jacobini graduated in philosophy and in utroque iuris in both civil and canon laws from the Roman Seminary. Named official of the Sacred Congregation of the Propaganda Fide on November 28, 1866, he was successively appointed prefect of studies and professor of Greek at the named seminary and substitute in the Secretariat of Apostolic Briefs. Appointed domestic prelate of His Holiness on August 2, 1877, he was assigned as secretary of the Sacred Congregation of Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs on September 19, 1879, vice-librarian of the Holy Roman Church on November 16, 1880, canon of the chapter of the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica and prefect of Studies of the Pontifical Roman Athenaeum S. Apollinare, on November 18, 1880. Aged forty three, Jacobini was elected archbishop of the titular see of Tiro, receiving his episcopal consecration on August 14, 1881, at the altar of the chair of the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica, from Cardinal Edoardo Borromeo, Archpriest of St. Peter's Patriarchal Vatican Basilica. Named secretary of the Sacred Congregation of the Propaganda Fide on March 30, 1882, he was furthermore named assistant at the Pontifical Throne on June 8, 1886, and assigned as apostolic nuncio in Portugal on June 16, 1891. Pope Leo XIII created him cardinal priest in the consistory of June 22, 1896 with the Title of Ss. Marcellino e Pietro, by Pope Leo XIII. Camerlengo of the Sacred College of Cardinals between April 19, 1897 and March 24, 1898, the Cardinal was named vicar of His Holiness for the diocese of Rome on December 14, 1899, and prefect of the Sacred Congregation of the Residence of Bishops and President of the Sacred Congregation of the Episcopal Visits in 1900. Passing unexpectedly away in his native city, his body was exposed in the Basilica of the Ss. XII Apostoli, being later buried in his family's tomb inside the local Campo Verano Cemetery.
