Henry Hartlege was the son of Johan Casper Heinrich Hartlage (1808-1858) and his wife Elizabeth Johanna Hundorf (1806-before 1872). His name was originally spelled Hartlage, the customary German spelling. His birth date comes from several sources. Although his death certificate shows an 1836 birth year, that is incorrect. He was born after his parents married in Louisville in April 1837. Census entries support the 1839 year of birth.
Henry married Sarah Anna Brinley on Oct. 30, 1859. They had 10 known children. Henry and his family were mobile, living in Daviess County, Kentucky in 1880 and back in Jefferson County by 1900. Around 1907 he and his wife were living in Eustis, Lake County, Florida.
Henry and two brothers enlisted in the Union Army, being enrolled in Company B, 1st Battalion, Provost Guard of Louisville. He enlisted on October 1, 1861 and entered service on October 8, 1861. Henry and other enlisted members were to stay in the vicinity of Louisville, KY and were to receive $20 per month pay. General Buell changed this to $13 per month. The Secretary of War allowed those promised higher pay to muster out. Company B and a larger portion of three other companies were discharged in October 1862 at Louisville. Henry's service ended October 4, 1862. His rank while in service was a Private.
Sarah Anna Brinley Hartlege died on May 1, 1909. Henry remarried on May 8, 1913 to Emma Roberta Dale, maiden name Ewing, widow of William E. Dale. She was born January 4, 1859 and died on August 20, 1932.
The cause of Henry's death was chronic endocarditis, fatty degeneratious dilitation of heart. Chronic interstitial nephritis was listed on the death certificate as contributory.
