Honey Grove

Time of the funeral of John J. Smith, 60, who died Wednesday, still awaited word from a son on Okinawa, but service will be held at First Baptist Church and burial made in Oakwood Cemetery by Robert West Funeral Home.

Son of the late George C. and Ettie (Boles) Smith, John Smith was born in Honey Grove, September 28, 1899.

He had various business interests here, including a clothing store.

He married Miss Velma Perry in 1925, her death occurring in 1934.

On October 1, 1939, he married Miss Lena May Avery, who survives, besides these children: Mrs. Roy Rigsby, Dallas; Johnny R. and Jesse D. Smith, Honey Grove, and A-1c Dan C. Smith on Okinawa; four grandchildren, and these brothers and sisters: Sid Smith, Houston; Minter B. Smith, Roswell, N.M.; Mrs. Edgar Maynette, Denison, and Mrs. J. C. Waggoner, Duncan, Okla.

John J. Smith Rites Held Here Saturday

Funeral services for John J. Smith, 60, longtime Honey Grove area businessman and farmer, were held at the First Baptist Church Saturday morning, February 6, at 10:00 o'clock. Officiants at the last rites were the church pastor, the Rev. T. J. Watts and the Rev. Samuel Rice, pastor of the Main Street Presbyterian Church. Robert West Funeral Home made interment in the Oakwood Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jack Self, James Benson, James Holman, Robert Gray, Robert Shelton, Sr. and Gray Collins.

Mr. Smith passed away in a Paris hospital at 7:00 o'clock Wednesday morning, February 3, 1960.

In failing health for several years, Mr. Smith had been seriously ill only two weeks and was thought to be improving satisfactorily, when he suffered a heart attack and died instantly while eating breakfast.

A native of Honey Grove, Mr. Smith was born September 28, 1899. His parents were the late George C. and Eddie Boles Smith.

He was married in 1926 to Miss Velma Perry and she passed away in 1934.

On October 1, 1939, he was married to Mrs. Lena Mae (Avery) Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lena Mae Smith; a daughter, Mrs. Roy Rigsby of Dallas; three sons, Johnny R. Smith and Jessie D. Smith, both of Honey Grove and Don C. Smith with the U.S. Air Force, stationed in Okinawa; four grandchildren; two brothers, Sid Smith of Houston and Minter B. Smith of Roswell, New Mexico, and two sisters, Mrs. Edgar Maynett of Denison and Mrs. J. C. Waggoner of Duncan, Oklahoma.

Mr. Smith was a member of the Baptist Church and the Woodman of the World, which organization her had served for many years as clerk.
