Walter Yastrop, at the time I knew him, was the main custodian at Muhlenberg Elementary School in Allentown. He did top notch work looking after the building and grounds. The students of my time all adored Walter; he knew all our names, was friendly, humble, and diligent. You got the feeling that Walter loved what he did, and not that he did it because nothing else was available to him. He took pride in a job well done, and his job was not a small one, because the school was not a small one. The picture of our school on this memorial shows the entrance to the old main building. To the right, around the corner of the building is my old patrol post at the top of the cement stairs. Past that on the right, what you cannot see, is a whole large modern annex, a long building of two stories. You also can't see the huge play area- a large macadam section, as well as an even larger grass area for games and baseball. It was a lot of responsibility.
Walter was beyond polite - he was warm, supportive, and we kids could talk safely with him about anything because he cared. It's a crime he had no children because he would have been a fabulous father, though he may have helped raise a stepson, a son of his wife's. I had returned several times to Muhlenberg to visit Walter, and no matter how many years went by he always knew me on sight and called out my name with a nice happy ring to it, clearly pleased to see me. As time went by I knew he had to have retired, but I eventually tripped over his phone number. I saved it on my cell phone, thinking I would call him. It was probably saved on there for 6 months when I saw his funeral notice and I deeply regretted waiting and not being able to visit with him one more time.

Born in Allentown, Walter was the son of the late Rudolph and Anna (Kwik) Yastrop. Walter was a member of Holy Nativity Catholic Church. He served in the Army at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. He worked for the Allentown School District.
Walter will be sadly missed by his entire family, nieces and nephews, and his loving companion, Ruth Mazepa of Orefield, with whom he resided.
