James is the son of Jarratt Westbrook and Lucy BLAKE Westbrook. The family migrated from South Carolina and are found in the 1840 Census of Monroe Co., MS.

James married Elmina nee GLASCOCK on April 12, 1843 at Wren, Monroe Co., MS. To this union were born these known children: Lucy Elmina "Margaret" and Mary Jane Westbrook.

After the death of Elmina in 1850, James married Louisa Amelia nee SHELL on January 29, 1852 in Monroe Co., MS. To this union were born these known children: Martha Lemmon, Thomas Jarrett, Robert Shell, Elizabeth "Betty" Eugenia, Nancy "Nannie" Louise, James Lee, Fannie B. and John Middleton Westbrook.
