Charles enlisted in the late fall of 1862 as a Private with B Company, 16th CT Infantry.
On 20 Apr 1864, Corporal Lee was captured at Plymouth, NC. He was imprisoned in Andersonville, GA. Presumably upon liberation, Charles was then hospitalized at Wright General Hospital, Wilmington, NC, where he subsequently died.
Charles' older brother, Edward Merwin Lee, earned a commission as Brevet General during the Civil War. In 1869, Edward was the primary force behind the nations' first suffrage act in WY Territory. It would be 50 more years before passage of the 19th Amendment.
Two of Charles' sisters are buried in Cheyenne, WY: Mary E. Stark and Ellen Bristol.
