Jno. Hathaway succumbs Wednesday P.M.
Death of Prominent Resident of Cleveland Township occurs Ten Months After That of his Wife – Funeral Occurs Friday.

John Hathaway, well-known retired farmer of Cleveland and Richland townships, died Wednesday evening at 8 o'clock at his home one mile northeast of South Whitley. He had been in failing health since the death of his wife, last February 4, and death was due to a complication of ailments.

He was born December 4, 1849 in Cleveland township, to the late Thomas and Malinda Hathaway, and he was aged 75 years, 10 months, and 9 days. September 13, 1875 he was wedded to Henrietta Smith, who passed away last February. Seven children were born to this union, of whom the following survive: Mrs. Harlo Williamson and Sherman Hathaway, of Cleveland township; Fred, of South Whitley; and Mrs. Del Williamson, of Richland township.

The decedent was one of a family of twelve children. A brother, Thomas, of Akron, Ind., and two sisters, Mrs. George Kyler, and Richland township and Mrs. Frank Compton, formerly of Columbia City, and now of Warsaw, survive. There are also nine grandchildren and twelve great grand children.

Mr. Hathaway resided practically all of his life in Cleveland township, with the exception of a number of years spent on a farm in Richland township. Nine years ago he retired from his farm north of South Whitley, and moved to the present residence, on a little tract he owned closer to town.

John Hathaway's friends numbered many, and his passing is noted with the keenest of sorrow by his associates. He was a member of the Oddfellow and K. of P., orders at South Whitley. The funeral occurs Friday at 2 p.m. at the Methodist church, in South Whitley, with Rev. Reno Tacoma, Baptist minister, officiating. Interment will be made in the South Whitley cemetery.
