As a young man he served as a Union Solder during the Civil War and as a result of exposure suffered with a life long disability. His father fought in the same company and was killed at the battle of Vera Cruz in Douglas County, Missouri at age 57.
On July 15, 1879 in Ozark County, Missouri he married Sarah Elizabeth "Ella" Milne Watt daughter of Robert and Sarah Ann {Steen} Milne. The Rev. Joseph Beesley performed the marriage. On Jan.19, 1881 a son, Ivan G. Martin, was born to this marriage. The couple divorced approximately ten years later. Son Ivan would go on to become a lawyer and State Legislator in Oregon in 1916. Sarah later became the wife of Charles Watt after their divorce.
On Aug. 29, 1899 Robert (age 56) married Maggie "Fish" McPherson Gammon (age 16) who was born Mar. 12, 1883 to L.T. and Mary Jane {Livesey} McPherson in Missouri. This marriage produced four children: Blunt Hervey Martin (author of the book- "Early Ozark Martin's"), Blawnie Mae Martin Fairchild (School Teacher in Elko, Nevada), Jack "Bolie" Martin of Okmulgee, Oklahoma and married to Cleta Mae {Bowers} Martin, and Robert Bruce "Bib" Martin, Jr., married to Dorothy E. Brunson of Colorado.
Robert B. Martin died on Feb. 10, 1915 and was buried at his request near the house where he lived s/of Mincy, Missouri.
In 1923 his second wife, Maggie along with her mother Mary McPherson and Maggie's two youngest children , moved to the Loveland/Ft. Collins area of Colorado where she married John Thomas Gammon ( a divorcee with two daughters-Hallie Gammon Boothroyd and Minnie V. Gammon). On Oct. 5, 1926 the marriage produced a son, John Eugene Gammon. This marriage soon ended in separation and by the early 1940's Maggie moved to Oklahoma to be with son's Blunt and Jack Martin.
After Maggie's death in 1960, the children of Robert B. Martin had his remains moved from the home place to the National Cemetery in Springfield, Missouri.
