Mr. Lewis died Jan. 4, 2009, at home under Heart to Heart Hospice Care of Tyler.
He was born May 28, 1914, in Brownsboro to the late William Andrew Lewis and Hattie Gertie Lawler Lewis. He was inducted into the Army on Dec. 29, 1942, and January 1943 he was assigned to Sheppard Field in Wichita Falls as a mess butcher for the 11th Mess Squadron until he was honorably discharged on Feb. 2, 1945, with the Good Conduct medal. He and wife Catholeen moved to Tyler, and he was employed by Lasater's Food Store for 31 years as butcher and later store manager. He enjoyed raising cattle and gardening. He was a faithful member of Pleasant Retreat United Methodist Church for 63 years.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Catholeen Lewis (McCallie) of Tyler; son, Larry Lewis and wife Eva of Tyler; sister, Ernestine Perry of Palestine; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Dwight Miles of Tyler; brother, Berwin Lewis of Tyler; and sister, Novis Robinson of Palestine.
Family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday at Jackson's Burks Walker Tippit Funeral Home.
