Jesse was the only child of James Hilliard Marattay and Catherine Gore. He was educated and grew up in Washington County, assisting his father in the trade of druggist. He eventually moved to Spencer and bought 340 acres of farmland.

He married Susan Ruble and together they had five children, 3 girls and two boys.

He bought a store from Thaddeus Connolly and opened the Marattay Store at Little Mount in 1868. The post office at Little Mount was established in Marattay's store in February 1868 and operated until 1906. Jonathan was the postmaster and he also served as Common School Commissioner. He was also a Free Mason.
