Hillard was the son of George Monroe Ward and Susan A. McMullan Ward. He was the twin brother of George Cullen Ward. He died at 88 years of age and for many years the Ward twins were considered the oldest twins in Georgia and many Elberton Star newspaper articles covered their birthday party celebrations held on July 4th.
