George Monroe Ward was the son of Richard Ward and Sarah Roebuck Ward. George's father died when he was two years old and his mother Sarah Roebuck Ward died in 1836 when George was 12 years old.

Abner Adams was appointed guardian for George M. Ward and Robert N. Ward on Feb 5th, 1839, according to Elbert County Court house records. It's unknown what the relationship was between Abner Adams and the Wards. It's also unknown what happened to the other Ward children, if they were living at the time of their mother's death.

George Monroe Ward married Susan A. McMullan on 21 Dec 1848 and together they had six children:

1. Luella "Lou" Blanche Ward (1856 - 1934) she married Thomas Jackson Wansley before 1894.
2. Erastur Hillard Ward (1860 - 1949) twin of George Cullen Ward, Hillard married Fanny Corry.
3.George Cullen Ward (1860-1946) he married 3 times
a. Nancy "Nannie" Elizabeth Fleming (1865-1892)
b. Laura O. Adams (1869-1919)
c. Mattie Smith Holiday
4. Martha Frances " Fannie" Ward (1866-1963) she married John Walton Taylor.
5. Susan Arnette "Nettie" Ward (1868-1949) she married Augustus Moton.
6. Sallie T. Ward (1868-1946) she marred Henry Eugene Thorton.

George Monroe Ward served the civil war and his tombstone reads: PVT CO H 3 REGT CAV GA STATE GUARD CSA. His brother Robert N. Ward also served in the same unit. He lived to be 83 years old and died in Elbert County, GA, in 1907.
