Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Bassano in Teverina, Isidoro Verga received his initial studies in Orte and Viterbo, prior to entering the Collegio Romano in Rome and the La Sapienza University, where he specialized in canon law. Ordained priest in 1859, he was soon appointed lawyer of the tribunal of the Sacred Roman Rota and 'sommiste' of the Sacred Congregation of Bishops. Named pro-prefect of the Sacred Congregation of the Tridentine Council on January 29, 1877, he served as its secretary from July 30, 1878 till 1884, when at fifty two years of age, he was created cardinal deacon in the consistory of November 10 by Pope Leo XIII with the deaconry of Sant'Angelo in Pescheria. Appointed prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signature on July 31, 1885 and prefect of the Sacred Congregation of Bishops and Regulars on November 12, 1888, he opted for deaconry of Santa Maria in Via Lata on June 1, 1891, and later for the order of cardinal priests and the title of San Callisto on June 22, 1896. Named grand penitentiary on October 1, 1896, he opted for the order of bishops and the suburbicarian see of Albano, being elected its ordinary on November 30, 1896. Receiving his episcopal consecration on the following December 13 from Cardinal Luigi Oreglia di San Stefano, Cardinal Verga died in Rome aged sixty seven. His body was exposed in the basilica of San Lorenzo in Damaso and later buried in the chapel of the Sacred Congregation of the Propaganda Fide inside the local Campo Verano Cemetery.
