Sarah Eliza McClellan was born near Black Creek Church at the home of her maternal grandmother, Margaret Parks Davis. At birth she was christened Margaret Anna, but when just a month old her mother died, and she was given her mother's name instead. Her father remarried and raised a second family with whom she would keep up an affectionate correspondence, but she continued to reside with her grandmother until Mrs. Davis's death in 1861, when she went to live with an aunt, Martha Davis Harris (Mrs. Samuel Washington Harris). She studied music at Thomasville (NC) Female College, graduating in 1877. Thereafter she made her home in Jefferson, NC with her half-aunt, Eleanor Foster, until her marriage to John Addison Barnhardt in 1878.

For the next 43 years she and her husband resided in Pioneer Mills, where 13 children were born to them. Sarah (who was always known to family and friends as "Miss Sallie") continued to teach the occasional music pupil and served for a time as organist for the Rocky River Presbyterian Church.

Following the death of her husband in 1923, Sallie made her home with her unmarried daughter Maggie in Concord, where she was active in the American War Mothers and the First Presbyterian Church.

Besides those shown below under "Family Links," her children included:
- James Monroe Barnhardt (1896 - 1972)
- Sarah Barnhardt (McCaskill) (1901 - 1995)
