His tombstone gives just whole years, but the English translations of St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church (page 27) reported his complete birth date.

William had four step-siblings, children of his mother by her first husband (Heinrich Schmidt/Smith). All are also in Oak Grove: Louise Smith Schlaubach, John C. Smith, Henry Smith Jr. and Louis W. Smith Sr.

The William buried with this William's parents is his nephew, the son of his half-sister Louise Smith Schlaubach, the grandson of Mary C. Smith Miller.

This William, son of Mary Miller by her second husband (Wilhelm Mueller/Miller), is buried just below the road that divides section 19 (where his half-brother Louis Smith is) from section 23, where this William is.

The elder Mary and William are in section 1 by the Eighth and Washington gate. The other Smith siblings are along Washington Street side of the cemetery, in section 15 (John, unmarked) and 25 (Louise, unmarked; and Henry).

This William's wife Anna's parents, Anthony and Anna Schmidt/Smith, were neighbors of this William's parents and also of his half-sister Louisa Smith Schlaubach in the Harmar area "Dutch Run" (today's Gilman Street and Indian Run) in 1880. The relatedness of the Schmidts on both sides of his life is yet unclear to descendants. One census says Anthony and Anna were from Austria, another says Prussia. The exact origin of his mother's first husband's Schmidts is not known.

William's middle name is the same as the married name for his mother Maria/Mary's sister, Catherine Gernand Beltz, who is buried in Putnam Cemetery.

When William married, he was listed as a resident of Harmar. When he died, his address was cited as "Devol's Run."
