Sam was the son of John William and Mary Adeline Carpenter Avery.He was the grandson of Daniel David Avery and Sarah Catherine Speake,James Carpenter and Martha Patsy Johnson. He is believed to be a great-grandson of Thomas and Margaret Avery,John Carpenter and Mary "Polly" Mauney Carpenter,Daniel Johnson and Mary Morton Johnson, all of North Carolina.Samuel married Dulcenia Cary Feb. 8, 1886 in Carroll County,Arkansas. They were the parents of Viola "Ole" Avery Newton and Hugh Densmore Avery.After Dulcenia's death he married Doshia Arvilla Williams.They were the parents of Elmer Avery,Leona Avery Jones,Dale Avery,Ruby Avery Blevins.Samuel was a farmer and homesteaded east of the town of Blue Eye,Missouri,beside his brothers George and Burt Avery.
