Jim passed away after a long battle with cancer on Friday, Dec. 26, 2008, at his home on Standpipe Road, surrounded by all of his family.
James "Jim" Hiram Neatherlin was born April 3, 1931, in Tombstone, Ariz., to Hiram M. and Julia "Lewis " Neatherlin. Jim graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1949. After graduation Jim worked in the Gaudalupe Mountains building fences at the Frijole Ranch. He served two years in the Army and was stationed in Japan from 1951-53.
Jim met the love of his life, Lavonne McGarry, in the early 1950s and they married in 1956. Jim was employed at Southwest Potash for 14 years as a welder. Jim joined the Pipe Fitters Union Local 412 and became a member for life. Jim was a devoted family man and loved by many. He was active with 4-H and was an American Little League President when his sons were young. His hobbies included bike riding and Sunday drives. Jim enjoyed family gatherings and visiting with his loved ones. His favorite author was Louis L'Amour and he had read all of his books. Jim was a life long member of Sunset Church of Christ.
Jim was preceded in death by both parents, sister Emma Hickman and an infant daughter, Jill Neatherlin.
Survivors are: his wife of 52 years, Lavonne, of the family home; sons Jimmy and wife Chris, and Jeff and wife Gentry, all of Carlsbad, and Joel and wife Denise of Las Cruces; brothers Ben and John Neatherlin; sisters Doodie Neatherlin and Mary Supple, seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild and foster child Jerome Holyan Manulito of Searcy, Ark.
