Hi was hired by Julie's father to break horses. She said that she "knew of him, had met him, and had seen him around at dances within the community". They became better acquainted while he was working at the Lewis Family ranch at Crow Flat, Otero County, New Mexico

Hiram and Julie married March 6, 1929 in Carlsbad, Eddy Co., New Mexico.

Hi had a herd of horses he had caught and broken, preparing to sell. He and Julie traveled by horseback herding the horses to Arizona. Before they arrived, the depression hit and there was not a market to sell them. They were broke, and could not return home. Hi worked as a ranch hand or at any job he could get. Their first son, James Hiram "Jim," was born in Tombstone, AZ., April 3, 1931. They began slowly trying to make their way back to New Mexico.

By January 1933, they were in Virden, Hidalgo County, New Mexico. They had two more children; both born while living in Virden. A son was born January of 1933 and a daughter born March 1935.

They lived in Artesia, NM, where Hi's maternal grandmother Brown resided in 1938. By 1940 they were in Hope, NM. They moved to Carlsbad in 1942, and Hi was employed at Potash Company of America for a time. That just was not for him, he moved on to a cement company and was carrying a bucket of cement up a ladder when he fell and broke his leg. He then hired on with Hamilton roofing.

Hi and Julie bought a home in Carlsbad in 1944, but Hi eventually went back to ranching. He lived on, and ran, various ranches in the area after that. They were living on a family ranch at the time of his death. Hi and Julie had a total of 6 children, 3 sons and 3 daughters.

His first love was his family; his 2nd was always the horses.
