As soon as he was old enough, D'Orr left the farm and got a job with the Park Service and spent his summers working on roads and other odd jobs in Yellowstone Park.

In the winter of 1959 D'Orr went to California to work. While there he met Leiloni Lupenui and brought her back to Star Valley as his wife. Two children were born to this marriage: Malia and Brad.
D'Orr went into business with his brothers and formed a hunting camp in Spread Creek, the next drainage north of the Gros Ventre, and began the Merritt Brothers hunting operation. The hunting business expanded to include hunting in both the North and South Forks of Spread Creek in Jackson Hole and Mule Deer hunting in the high country east of Star Valley.
In 1972 D'Orr was elected president of the Wyoming Outfitters Association, a position he was proud to hold.
