Phillip raised cattle and farmed in Washinton Twnshp, Johnson Co Iowa. Specialized in short horn cattle from Kentucky. His farm was on Shaver Creek He came to Iowa in April 1844 with his parents and settled in Washington Twnshp, Johnson Co. He married Hettie Grimes Dec 13,1855. They had five children
including Jenny, wife of George Wagner and Lincoln G Shaver.
Served in Capt James M Morgan's company of Iowa mounted dragoons in Mexican and Indian Wars from Dec 1847- Sept 1848.
Drove an ox cart to California during gold rush(1850)traveling for 5 months. Returned in fall 1853.
