Below are the funeral notes of Rev. WW Hiller of Custer Community Church in Custer, SD for Jessie Mattox.
Longtime Custer County resident Jessie Mattox passed away in a retirement home in Rapid City, May 11, (1972), following a short illness. Jessie Mattox came to Custer with her family in March 1909, and settled on a Homestead southeast of Custer where the family resided. She was passed in death by her husband (Robert) on December 29, 1918. Following his death, the family moved to the present home site where they have lived since early 1919.
Jessie Catherine Lathrop was born at Abbot, Iowa August 24, 1879. She was married to Robert Elkanah Mattox June 9, 1897, and lived on a farm near Abbot, Iowa, until moving to South Dakota. She is survived by four sons; Reuben of the home here in Custer, Leo of Pringle, SD, Harold of Rapid City, SD, and Glenn of Seattle, WA.; two daughters; Hazel Forum of Eagle Point, Oregon and Sedalia Allen of Frederick, Colorado; 22 grandchildren, 21 great grand-children and 7 great-great grandchildren, three sisters and one brother.
These notes were written in long hand and were attached to her obituary in the archives of Custer Community Church. At the bottom of the note there is a notation; 2 more great grandchildren.
