Helen Virginia Whitney, 84, of Lake City, died Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at Lakeside Nursing Center. She was born Nov. 18, 1923, in Portia, the daughter of the late James and Alice Brummett Coy. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Sherman Whitney; son-in-law, Harvey Thompson; brothers, Bill Coy and Gene Coy; and sister, Juanita Harvey.
She was retired from Arkansas State University as a housekeeper and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.

She is survived by her daughters, Mitzie (Jerry) Whitten of Brookland, Wilma Thompson of Lake City; sons, James T. (Verna) Whitney of Paragould, Gary (Debbie) Whitney of Dixie; sister Alice-Jewel Brun of Little Rock; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held at the Greene County Memorial Gardens at 2 p.m. Saturday with Paul Bean officiating. Grandsons, Alex Whitten, Adam Whitney, James Whitney, Darrell Thompson, Harvey Edward Faulkner and David Bellomy, served as pallbearers. Granddaughters, Erica Whitten, Tara Bellomy and Janis Faulkner, were honorary pallbearers.
