Bertha was born in Vaxjo, Sweden. She was the daughter of Jehan August Arneson and Johanna Maria Carlsdotter. At the age of 13, her mother died and she took over caring for the family. She was the only living daughter of 9 children. She came to America with her brother, Ellis, on August 18, 1916. They departed from Gothenburg, Sweden on the ship "Stockholm". She was only 21 years old. She had fallen in love with John Tillstrom before she left and he had preceded her to the U.S. He found a job at Union Carbon Company in West Virginia and Bertha and John were married on Dec. 17, 1916. John died on May 27, 1917 from a ruptured appendix. She was alone and pregnant and moved to Sycamore, IL to live with her Aunt Jennie. Bertha obtained several housekeeping jobs and Fritz hired her as his housekeeper. They were married on September 11, 1920. She and Fritz together had one daughter and 3 sons. Their son Ellis, married Ann Holroyd of Genoa, IL and Ann Magnuson is buried at the Genoa Cemetery in Genoa, IL. Ellis died and is buried in Jakarta, Indonesia.
