Pahiatua Herald, 10 Jan 1916
A Puketoi Settler A report reached Pahiatua to-day that Mr Donald Fraser, a widower, of Puketoi, Pongaroa, had been found dad in a woolshed at Puketoi. Deceased was a well-known settler. It is believed deceased had been worrying a good deal over certain land transactions. His wife died some time ago.
Woodville Examiner, 10 Jan 1916
Donald Fraser; aged 45 years Woodville people received a shock on Saturday evening when they hard that Mr Donald Fraser, who was well-known in this district for the past 24 years, had committed suicide at his farm at Puketoi that morning.
Mr Gothard, Coroner, held an inquest on the body yesterday morning. Witnesses testified to finding the body in the woolshed and then they telephoned for the police.
Constable Doggett, of Pongaroa, stated he found the deceased lying on his back in the woolshed. On examining the body, he found the face and hands covered with dry blood. The body was almost cold. The he found the jaw bones, teeth and lower portion of the facial bones were shattered to pulp, apparently by some strong explosive. He searched in the vicinity but failed to find any fragments of the explosive case. In the wool-shed was a large case containing gelgnite and dynamite cartridges and a quantity of fuse. In the constable's opinion, the injuries could only have been caused by the deceased himself and death must have been instantaneous.
James McCool, a witness, stated the deceased had asked him if he knew where the dynamite caps were and he said he did not and he had never seen any dynamite caps on the property.
The Coroner returned a verdict 'That the deceased, Donald Fraser, had taken his own life while temporarily insane."
It is only about 12 months ago since Mr Fraser lost his wife by death. A girl about 15 years of age and twin boys, 12 years, are left to mourn their terrible loss.
