The son of William & Sarah (Rhodes) Haack, in 1860 he was a clerk living in York, York County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 5" tall and had brown hair and blue eyes. He married Cassandra Ann Hartman ca. 1863 and fathered Ida (b. @1864), Charles Frederick (b. 06/10/66), Walter Franklin (b. 07/22/67), Lucy Eugenia (b. 06/03/68), Minnie M. (b. 04/22/71 - married Edward Raphael Spangler), Clara (b. @1872), Sarah Elizabeth "Sadie" (b. 08/27/74 - married Jacob Henry Reigart), Maggie (b. @1876), Anna K. (b. 05/22/79 or 80 - married Charles E. Levinite), and Grace B. (b. @1880).

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-seven in York August 18, 1864, mustered into federal service in Harrisburg August 25 as a private with Co. A, 200th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 30, 1865. His brothers Charles Frederick, Lewis Rhodes, and William Alexander Haack all served with the 87th Pennsylvania Infantry. Their surname inevitably is found spelled "Hawk" in written communications, suggesting its pronunciation.

He died at his Duke Street home.
