Manawatu Standard, 24 Aug 1920
The death occurred at Woodville on Sunday last of one of the earliest residents of that district, in the person of mr Hans Olsson, aged 80 years. Born at Helsingbord, Sweden, in 1840, he left London in the sailing ship 'England' for New Zealand in 1870, coming to the Manawatu early in the following year. He settled in Woodville, arriving there five years before that township was surveyed. At that period supplies were brought up the Manawatu river from Foxton by the Maori. Mr Olsson was amongst those engaged in the work of forming the road where the Ballance bridge is now situated and during the days when coaches ran regularly through the Gorge prior to the advent of the railway he was foreman in charge of the road, his mate being Mr J. Barrott, formerly of Woodville. He was also tollkeeper of the Upper Gorge bridge for 16 years, but when he reached the age of 67 in the year 1907, he retired from permanent active work, although at times he was employed casually on road work. The late Mr Olsson had many interesting reminiscences in the days of the pioneers. He remembered the machinery and materials being taken through the Gorge by the Mr A. McMinn to start the Woodville Examiner. Mr Olsson was a great walker and often walked to Palmerston North and back after work on Saturday nights, following the river when the road was impassable with mud. He was married in 1886 and leaves a widow and two son, Messrs A. and J. G. Olsson of Woodville to mourn their loss. He was apparently in good health up to the time of his death, passing away peacefully in his sleep.

NOTE as per the toll photo .. The Gorge road opened in 1872 and in 1875 the Government established a tollhouse at the Woodville end to defray the cost of maintaining the road. Hans Olsson was the third and last toll-keeper and also worked on the Gorge road. In 1912 tolls were abolished and the tollhouse was demolished making the Olssons redundant and the small settlement which grew up around the tollhouse disappeared. The fee for a horse and rider was ninepence, a horse and cart was one shilling and threepence and sheep travelling through the gorge were charged per head.
