Theodore Afton Kennington, 77, Afton died July 11, 1985 of a heart attack at the Afton Senior Citizens Center.
Funeral services were held July 15 at the Afton Third Ward LDS Church with Robert McKim officiating. Burial was under the direction of Schwab Mortuary at the Afton Cemetery.
Theodore was born in Afton on Sept 21, 1907, the first child of Stella Call and Albert Edwin Kennington. He was also the first grandchild of Lucy King Call, born on her birthday. A nephew, Ted Milton Erickson, was also born on the same day and was named to honor his uncle, Ted Kennington.
Ted was thought to have had rheumatic fever and his early school attendance was irregular due to health problems, so he and his sister Melba where in the second grade together.
He, as a boy, trapped gophers and his father paid one cents per gopher tail, beginning a lifetime of hunting and trapping.
Theodore started high school in Afton and due to health problems and the call of the outdoors, dropped out after one semester. He was an avid reader and preferred learning by selective reading. He enjoyed reading adventure, history of the settling of the West, outdoor hunting and fishing accounts, The Guiness Book of World Records and Ripley's Believe It or Not fascinated him. He became a local authority on bandits of the early West.
He was called to Cheyenne early in the draft for World War II but was rejected due to health problems. He considered himself a patriot and did much community service by putting flags on veteran;'s graves on Memorial Day. In his lifetime he dug at least 445 graves by hand, filling them later and carried the extra soil away in a wheelbarrow.
Ted enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping and raising sheep, goats, chickens, cats and dogs. He was a believer of self sufficiency.
Ted provided a home for his nephew, Donald, for the past six years and remained unmarried.
He is survived by two sisters and one brother, Ada Berlyn Kennington of Salt Lake City; Melba K. Erickson and Glen r. Kennington, both of Afton, grandparents William H. and Annie S. Kennington.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dale.
