Graydon was the fifth of eight children. He graduated from Benton High School in Columbia County, Pennsylvania, in 1938. On May 26, 1942, he married Mary Elizabeth Miller at the Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church in Wilkes-Barre. The couple had four children: Graydon Charles, David Ricky, Ivan Ernest, and Alysia Ann. He was employed by Fowmer Trucking Company as a truck mechanic for many years until his retirement.
