William John Orr was son of Paul Orr and Sarah Jane Poage, and was born in Mount Vernon, Lawrence County, Missouri. He as there as age 6 in the 1860 census and age 17 in 1870. That year, he worked on his father's farm.

He married Margaret Ella Cochran on 20 January 1881, and their first two children were born in Mount Vernon, MO. In about 1886, the family moved near the mouth of the Verdigris River, near Fort Gibson, in Indian Territory (northern Oklahoma). The rest of their children were born in Indian Territory.

Their children were Sarah Mae Orr, William Thomas Orr, Clyde Paul Orr, Albert Myers Orr, Emma Geraldine Orr, and Mary Alba Orr.

The family was across the river at Sander's Ford, near where the old Verdigris Bridge on Highway 88 crossed toward Oologah. William Orr died in 1904 of double pneumonia. He died in Claremore, Rogers County, Oklahoma.

1900 census shows the family in Township 22, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory.
