"Woodland," the Houston family's home in Huntsville, Texas, now part of the museum grounds at Sam Houston State University. After the Houstons built this house in 1847, they lived in it through most of Sam's U.S. Senate career, until 1859. Four of their children were born here. The kitchen was detached and built of unfinished, squared logs; whereas the same logs in the home's construction were covered with hand-hewn, whitewashed boards.

Mr. & Mrs. Sam Houston had previously owned a home in Independence, Texas; purchased in 1853, owned concurrently with their Huntsville home, and converted to a parsonage when the Houston family went to live in the Governor's Mansion in Austin.

After her husband died in Huntsville, Texas (1863), Margaret Houston bought this house and lived in it with her children, until she died in the yellow fever epidemic of 1867. - Photo was taken in July 2011.
