David Franklin Ralston

David Franklin Ralston was born near Slatelick, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, on May 3 1847, and passed away at his home in Viola at 8:50 pm June 19, 1928, aged 81 years, 1 month and 16 days. He was one of 11 children born to James B. and Nancy McCormic (should be McCormick) Ralston, all of who preceded him in death except one sister Mrs. W. E. Lighter of Dodge City, Kansas, and James Ralston of Marshalltown, Iowa.

His parents left Pennsylvania via Pittsburg in the fall of 1854 and came to Genesceo, ILL there they were met and taken across country to Galesburg, as at that time there were no railroads running into Galesburg. The family settled four miles south east of Galesburg, not far from present day Lombard College. He continued to live near Galesburg and Oneida until 1867 when he went to Oneida to learn the blacksmith trade.

In Oneida on December 8, 1868, he was married to Frances Emily Gifford. The next year they moved to New Windsor where he followed the vocation of blacksmithing until 1884 when they moved to a farm six miles northwest of New Windsor.

In 1909 he retired from the farm, moving to Viola. Here for several years he was engaged in the grain business, then later in the harness business until two years ago when his health failed him.

On June 19, 1926 he was stricken with angina pectoris, but rallied and lived until June 19, 1928, exactly two years from the day he was stricken. During that time he was never strong but recovered sufficiently to be able at times to walk several blocks.

While a resident of New Windsor he became a member of the Congregational church, later joining the Methodist church. When he came to Viola he transferred that membership to the Viola Methodist church where he remained a faithful attendant while his health would permit.

Three years after the death of his first wife he married her sister, Elizabeth V. Gifford, who has ever been a faithful helpmate. She with his five children survive. the children are L. Lee Ward of San Gabriel, Calif; Roy S. and Ralph M. of New Windsor; Winfred N. of Rock Island and Isola F. at home. One daughter Lillian died in infancy.

Funeral services were held from the porch of the home on Thursday, June 20 at 2 pm, his pastor, Rev Edward Hardy, pastor of the M. E. church, officiating and interment was in the family lot in New Windsor Cemetery.

Casket bearers, who had been selected by the deceased were: Frank Bollman, H. E. Wood, Chas. Minteer, L. L. Park, Ralph Terrey, John Pinkerton. The funeral service was largely attended. many floral offerings bore silent tribute of respect to the departed.

Among the out of town relatives and friends present at the funeral were James Ralston of Marshalltown, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Glen Ralston of Conrad, Iowa, W. N. Ralston and family, Messrs. James Eckhart, Clyde Buffum and Simmons of Rock Island; Wesley Ralston and family, Mr. and Mrs. John Enderlin, daughter Caroline and sons James and Loren of Alexis; Mrs. and Mrs. George McNeil and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Wertz of Galesburg; Mr. and Mrs. Will Coburn of Rock Island; Mr. and Mrs. Carl Larson, Mr. and Mrs. Haldon Parker, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Mead.
