James was the son of James Barr and Nancy Jane McCormick Ralston. Siblings: Amanda Ann, Matilda Jane, John Nelson, David Franklin, Sarah Ellen, Ellis Simkins, Margaret Rebecca and Alice Melinda Ralston.

James served in the Civil War: Union, Illinois Regiment, 102 Infantry Company I. Joined 9 Aug 1862 in Oneida, Knox, IL. Mustered in, 2 Sep 1862 in Knoxville, Knox, IL. Mustered out, 6 Jun 1865 in Washington D.C. Papers states that he was 5'8", Gray eyes, Light complexion and light hair. Occupation: Farmer.

James married Rebecca Kennedy, daug of George and Margeret Davidson Kennedy, 4 Nov 1868 in Knox County, Ill. Children with Rebecca: Inez May, Emma Jane, Minnie Myrtle, Oren Clifton, Mark Elwood, Raymond Bertrum and Fern Una Ralston.

James married Susan Elizabeth Grant, daug of Alexander Hamilton and Nancy Jane Chitty Grant, 5 Apr 1887 in Grundy County, Iowa. Children with Susan: Glen A, Iva, Ina, Frank J, Harold Grant and Clifton Gordon Ralston.
