Ray Banks was the second eldest of Frank and Annie (Person) Banks' 7 children. He was born on June 28, 1923. His twin sister, Faye Banks (1923 - 1928), precedes him in passing.

Ray attended LeFlore County Public Schools. Upon leaving school, he enlisted in the US Army where he served as a Paratrooper in the 551st Airborne Command.

Cpl Banks was in the invasion of Sicily and was wounded in Italy. After hospitalization in Sicily, he returned to active duty.

Cpl Ray Banks died Jan 3, 1945 in combat action at Basse Bodeux in the Ardennes, Belgium, otherwise known as The Battle of the Bulge.

In what United States Army historian Charles MacDonald called "the greatest battle ever fought by the United States Army," the 551st demonstrated the very best of the Army tradition of performance of duty in spite of great sacrifice and against all odds. On 3 January 1945, the 551st from the division's line of departure at Basse Bodeux attacked against great odds and secured the imposing ridge of Herispehe.
The 551st Parachute Battalion was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation on February 23, 2001, by U.S. Army Chief of Staff Gen. Eric K. Shinseki during an official ceremony at the Pentagon.

He is survived by his parents, Frank and Annie, as well as his brothers: Tommy, Roy(Jay), Max and sisters:
Hazel, Rubye and Ruth.

He will ever be missed and cherished in the hearts and memories of those who are honored to have known him.
