David was the 11th of 13 children born to Allen MONTGOMERY and Susannah LARGENT of Mecklenburg, Burke, and Cherokee Counties, NC. David likely grew up in the Persimmon Creek area outside Murphy. On 1 Jun 1866, he married Mary S Graves "Polly" BRANDON [recorded as BRANNON], 1837-1916, in Cherokee County on 1 Jun 1866. Shortly afterward, the couple migrated to Roane County, Tennessee, where some of his siblings also settled.

At eighteen, David went into the Union Army in Tennessee. He served from 1 Aug 1862 to 26 Jan 1863 in Co F, 2d Tn Cav, USA, the same company as several of his brothers, including Elijah who was a sergeant and Isaac T. who left the unit sick, made it back to Cherokee County, North Carolina, and was killed not far from the home of the men's parents. David himself evidently returned to Cherokee County following the war - at least long enough to marry Mary BRANNON/BRANDON in 1866.

He fathered two daughters, Elizabeth "Lizzie" MONTGOMERY (1867-1900) and Rachel Emoline/Emaline MONTGOMERY MAJORS KURTZ (1868-1958). Lizzie is buried near her father in the Bean Community Cemetery which is beside Whites Creek; Rachel is buried in Willard Park Cemetery, South Harriman, Roane Co, TN in a plot with her son Mack and his wife Clara's family. David's wife Mary BRANDON MONTGOMERY is buried in an unmarked grave in Soldier's Circle at Harriman City Cemetery, Harriman, Roane Co, TN.
