Joshua Barton, a farmer, left South Carolina and moved with his family into Cass County, Georgia after 1830 and settled in the area called Pine Log.
Cass County was created from a portion of Cherokee County on December 3, 1832, and was first called Cass County in honor of General Lewis Cass of Michigan.
In the early 1830s, much of the land was still occupied by the Cherokee Indians, but white settlers had begun to move from the Carolinas and Virginia into Georgia seeking opportunities for their family and since Joshua was a farmer, he probably hoped to gain a portion of the rich farmland.
Joshua died after the 1850 census where he was living with his son Joshua's (Jr) family in Pine Log.
Sons Vinson, Cannon and Bailey all died during the Civil War years. Sons Bloomer, Joshua, Jr., and George moved to Texas.
